Everyone goes through challenging situations in life, and while most of the time you are able to successfully navigate through difficulties you’ve faced, there’s nothing wrong with seeking out extra support when you need it.
Seeking therapy is an individual choice. Studies have shown the hardest part of therapy is making the first initial call. There are many reasons why people come to therapy. Sometimes it is to deal with long-standing issues, or problems with anxiety or depression, or you have experienced a traumatic event. Other times it is in response to unexpected changes in one’s life such as a divorce, work transition, having children, parenting philosophies, finical concerns or conflicts in the family unit. Many seek the advice of counsel as they pursue their own personal exploration and growth. Through this process, you deserve to find someone you are compatible with and who meets your unique needs. Therapy can be insightful, helpful, personally fulfilling, challenging and rewarding.
I am passionate about human growth and development and believe that everyone has the potential, and right, to flourish. I work to help clients find and utilize tools that will help them do so, in a supportive and encouraging, but sometimes challenging, environment. I believe it is crucial for clients to set the tone in treatment and that it's my job to help them stretch and grow in new directions. With unconditional positive regard and respect, I help people learn new methods to cope with life's inevitable stress and work through past and/or current trauma(s). I also emphasize self-care, realizing that this can often be the toughest thing for people to do; take time in the day to do something for themselves.
Children often experience trauma and/or difficult events, and struggle to make sense of them, often experiencing their effects in a variety of ways; behavior problems, mental health issues, educational struggles, difficulties in primary relationships. I have dedicated my career to working with children who experience these struggles. I use many techniques when treating children; the most important is to use humor and fun during sessions and include their caregivers in treatment. Children process differently than adults, they have a curious nature and want to learn and explore, and I support them through their journey of regaining the trust and sense of safety that is often fractured with the experience of trauma. I primarily use EMDR "Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing" to help these children with trauma, anxiety, depression the feeling of responsibility that often occurs after experiencing a traumatic event, and difficulty in primary relationships. I also believe that children need their caregivers to help them heal, and emphasize working with parents concurrently with their children, especially when the family is experiencing difficulties in relationships.
